Dance and technology meld at DiverseWorks

11202008_MichaelHart.JPGHoustonist has always been fascinated by cyborgs. From The Bionic Man to Data, we've often wondered about the possibilities of combining human intelligence with technology.

So we're intrigued by this description of this weekend's upcoming DiverseWorks performance The Invention of Minus One:

Jonah Bokaer's The Invention of Minus One infuses technology into an exhibition that propels dance and motion-capture techniques into new realms of innovation. Bokaer began using state-of-the-art digital software to develop new movement vocabularies and performance possibilities. Through motion-capture research compiled from a year of epic investigation, Bokaer examines the actual and the virtual, presence and absence. The program will also include False Start, Bokaer's technology-influenced solo homage to Jasper Johns' renowned painting, which features 3d animation in addition to solo performing.

Technologically-inspired cutting-edge dance? Imagine all those reels of actors wearing motion-capture suits for the making-of special effects of our favorite childhood movies. Now add to that image one of the country's most lauded up-and-coming choreopgraphers. Count us in! Especially with costumes designed by Isaac Mizrahi.

The performance was commissioned by DiverseWorks, along with Danspace Project and The National Performance Network. Tickets are available online as well as through DiverseWorks' 24-hour hotline, (713) 335-3445.
