Let's Go to the Glide-In

That's right, folks, it's not a drive-in -- it's a glide-in! Discovery Green has been hard at work creating Houston's only outdoor ice rink for the holidays, which will have its grand opening tomorrow night!

DG ICE

The Ice at Discovery Green is comprised of two rinks -- the 7,200 square foot main rink and a smaller one called the Snow Box just for the kiddos -- and features real ice, none of this artificial ice junk. For tomorrow's grand opening, the ice rink will be showing that holiday classic, White Christmas, on a giant screen next to the rink at 6:00 p.m. The screenings will continue throughout the holiday season, with a different Christmas movie shown every Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. as they present their Silver Blades on the Silver Screen series. Other movies to be screened include The Nightmare Before Christmas and Holiday Inn.

Of course, if you want to get out there and enjoy the ice before then, the rink will officially be open at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. For $10, you can rent a pair of skates and make like Kristi Yamaguchi (or Doug Dorsey) while chortling at those poor fools in New York City with their 200-square-feet-smaller ice rink at Rockefeller Center. Everything's bigger in Texas, indeed. And speaking of New York City, the Rockettes themselves will be making a special appearance tomorrow morning between 11:00 a.m. and noon.

The Ice at Discovery Green will be open every day until January 19, 2009. For a full list of upcoming events, visit their website or call 713.434.7465.
