H-Town Rock

For the Weekend of December 11th – 14th, 2008

Happy Wednesday Houston and welcome to the penultimate edition of H-Town Rock for 2008. After next Wednesday, we’re going on a bit of a holiday hiatus, but we hope that all eleven of our readers will return when the New Year arrives. As implicitly promised before, we’re toying with the idea of posting twice a week, so that we don’t ignore the great music that rolls through our city on Monday through Wednesday. Moreover, we’re going to do our best to bring you more artist interviews and show reviews for your reading enjoyment. So, please do stay tuned!

Thursday, December 11th
Dub Trio, Dixie Witch, and Wolves At The Door at Warehouse Live
Eugene Chadbourne and Walter Daniels at Rudyard's
Girl In A Coma and Acoustic Voodoo at Fitzgerald's

We never want to proclaim that someone has turned into an anachronism, but there are two ‘90s icons performing tonight, both trying to recapture some old magic: one retains his classic moniker, while the other attempts to rebrand himself (yet again!). Ice Cube floats into The Meridian this evening, while Perry Farrell will be down the street at Warehouse Live, and if we’re lucky, Perry will perform Jane’s Addiction tracks instead of any solo stuff he has prepared. If we're really lucky, Ice Cube show up at Walter’s to openly mock the shoddily-named act City Of Compton, and if that dream comes true, we hope someone will let us know.

Antique Curtains, The Delta Block, and The Wrong Ones at Notsuoh
Cyrus Chestnut at Cullen Theater
Ice Cube, Trick Trick, and Five Doza at The Meridian
The Jonbenét, O Pioneers!!!, Brian's Johnson, This Year's Tiger, and City of Compton at Walter's on Washington
Little Texas, Rachel Stacy, and Chris Webb at Arena Theatre
Pale, Southern Backtones, and Arthur Yoria at Rudyard's
Randy Weeks at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Saturate, Pandemic, 17 Theories, and Elysian at Fitzgerald's
The Secret Machines, PERETZ, Perry Farrell, and Electric Touch at Warehouse Live
Winter Wonder Slam: Featuring Toby Mac, Relient K, and Family Force 5 at Toyota Center

Honestly, we would really like to encourage folks to partake of the noisy, yet lovely, sounds of Hearts of Animals over at Walter’s – she never fails to entertain. Those of you who aren’t too afraid of leaving the friendly confines of the Loop would be well-served to travel to Clear Lake so as to support three of Houston’s finest acts. And to anyone reading this who might be even thinking of going to catch those two tribute bands playing at The Meridian’s Red Room: we are judging you.

As Eden Burns, Blind Sanctity, Bloodvoid, Lao Tzu, and Zone of Inhabitation at Fitzdown
Battery (Metallica Tribute) and Love It To Death (Alice Cooper Tribute) at The Meridian (Red Room)
Come See My Dead Person, Sideshow Tramps, and Spain Colored Orange at The Scout Bar
Little Brother Project at Cactus Music
Little Brother Project and Water at Rudyard's
The Secret Machines (Acoustic Performance) at Cactus Music
Secret Saturday Shows: Featuring Lazy Horse, Darwin's Finches, and Bottom Four at The Shady Tavern
Sleeping In The Aviary, Dizzy Pilot, and Hearts of Animals at Walter's on Washington
The Watermarks, Paris Falls, and The Boxing Lesson at The Mink

Speaking of other icons who have trouble resting on their laurels and recuperating from decades of substance abuse, AC/DC will be in town tonight. Before all of the classic rock aficionados who read Houstonist start hating on us too aggressively, we have nothing but admiration for the guitar skills of Angus Young, but we do call into question the need for bands whose music belongs in bygone decades to gather together for any manner of reunion tour (even if you DO have a “new” album, Duran Duran). Call us elitist, age-ist, hipster rock snobs; that’s fine, but don’t run to us complaining when you pay $89.50 (plus a service charge) just to hear the band play “Thunderstruck” and their other assorted classic-rock-radio staple tracks.

AC/DC at Toyota Center
Appetite for Destruction at House of Blues
Dan Dyer at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
