Houstonist, RSS & You

It has come to our attention that a few of you are reading Houstonist by hitting refresh on your browser every so often to check for new content. People, that is so 1999. Allow us to coach you into the 2000s with a quick lesson on RSS.

RSS, or Real Simple Syndication if you're not into the whole brevity thing, allows internet users to subscribe to content published by their favorite web sites, news channels, bloggers, etc. The content ends up consolidated in one place called a feed reader for consumers to check out at their leisure. Cool, right? Duh. But that's not the best part.

It's uber simple to set-up subscriptions to RSS feeds. You can use a computer-based application, but we prefer a web-based app (like Google Reader) so you can read your feeds on the fly. Once you've got a reader account set-up, just surf around your favorite sites. Look for in your browser's address bar. Click it. Voila. Google Reader (if you've chosen to go that route) will prompt you to add the feed to subscription list. Done.

I use the RSS, but never check it since I click all the links off of Twitter. Morning Roundup time is my favorite time of the morning.
