First Wednesday Book Club

Mudbound.jpg Houstonist loves our city's indie book stores, from Domy to Murder by the Book. And nothing is better than finishing a hot page-turner only to find someone else who wants discuss the book with you.

Brazos Bookstore hosts a First Wenesdays Book Club dedicated to discussing intelligent, independent and interesting books. This months' book will be Mudbound by Hillary Jordan, winner of the 2006 Bellwether Prize, which was founded to reward books of conscience, social responsibility and literary merit.

Set in 1946, city-bred Laura McAllan is trying to raise her children on her husband's Mississippi Delta farm. Two young men return from the war to help work the land, forming an unlikely friendship that drives the novel.

Don't worry if you haven't read the book yet. The meeting is open to everyone, and you can show up to help choose the book for March's gathering. Or you can buy February's book, The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent.
