Daily-ist: Monday

Metropolis at Rice University Cinema

The 1927 silent science fiction film Metropolis is an ode to all things Art Deco and is, in Houstonist's humble opinion, one of the most amazing films ever committed to celluloid.

Set in 2026, the movie explores the anonymity of capitalistic culture, the struggle of workers in the large corporate machine, and the ability of the elite class to get anything they want. And it's a love story, to boot.

The film's sweeping scenery and vision of a futuristic city are instantly recognizable, and the dramatic score adds to the tension at the heart of the story.

The movie is part of the De Lange Conference VII: Transforming the Metropolis series, a conference devoted to creating sustainable cities.

The film will be shown tonight at 7 p.m. at the Rice University Media Center. Above, Houstonist's favorite scene from the film.
