MLK Parade Plans Announced

Several parades celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will roll through the Houston area. Galveston is still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Ike, but organizers plan to fete Dr. King none the less. The parade is being scaled-back somewhat to a march. The Unity March will be held Saturday at Noon on the island.

In contrast, Houston will again have two parades honoring Dr. King. The MLK Parade Foundation will host the MLK Grande Parade - billed as "The Largest Celebration In Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the U.S." - which will roll on a route through downtown Houston. The Black Heritage Society's parade is built around a theme of "I Have a Dream" and seeks to honor Dr. King will a less commercial, more personal event. Both parades roll on Monday with the former getting underway at 10 AM and the latter at 2 PM.
