For the Weekend of 01/15-18/2009
Hello there Houston. This posting twice a week business has been keeping us busy, so we hope that you appreciate it. Honestly though, the more that we write about this town, the more we love it. People deride Houston too often for its negatives (freeway traffic, pollution levels, and suburban sprawl, amongst others), but the Bayou City has a great deal to offer its residents, from the burgeoning arts and cultural scene to the deep history present with its neighborhoods and institutions. It is our fervent hope here at H-Town Rock that our readers (all eleven of you) take full advantage of Houston's excellence on a regular basis - and this especially applies to the great local music.

Now, THIS is a Friday night! There seems to be something going on in all quarters of town to satiate nearly every possible appetite. The Duck is bringing the folk, Fitzgerald's will be filled with its usual quota of heavier alt-rock bands, and House of Blues will actually be presenting a blues show. Our crazy roommate will be enjoying the sounds of Thee Armada and Mechanical Boy at Warehouse Live, while Karina Nistal will be leading a diverse set of acts over at The Continental Club. There is no reason that people shouldn't be enjoying themselves on this night.

Saturday, January 17th
And the musical diversity continues into Saturday night. This is what makes Houston a great city. Where else can you regularly find folk, rock, punk, pop, dance, and hip-hop acts of such high quality performing on a regular basis? It would be our recommendation that you start your Saturday over at Cactus Music for some free beer and a free set from Something Fierce as they celebrate the beginning of a brand new tour. From there, Fitzgerald's and Walter's both have a raucous night in front of them, whether you're grooving with Tha Fucking Transmissions over at Walter's or jamming with Ceeplus and The McKenzies at Numbers. However, if you do decide to partake of the post-STP and Velvet Revolver version of Scott Weiland, may the deity of your choice have mercy upon your soul.

Sunday, January 18th
We almost didn't talk about Sunday's music, but we found it hard to ignore the presence of Bell Biv DeVoe and Keith Sweat. If these '90s-era crooners are still touring, does this mean that need to locate our Boyz II Men cassettes and some parachute pants? Furthermore, should we expect an MC Hammer reunion tour anytime soon? We need answers!

Taken from your sister site in regards to Followed By Static (Walter's Thursday):
"Taking prefab Casio beats and layering them with reverb-drenched vocals, spare guitars and fuzz, Followed by Static succeed at not-rock surprisingly well. They're working on the art of sneaking in melody where it struggles to take root, and abandoning a tune for grit just as the ear begins to settle. There's nothing but everything familiar about this group, and we're anxious to see how their sound develops."
Locals Antarctica Starts here dabble in shoegaze and rock. Dallas' Nervous Curtains power through angst driven piano songs. 8pm doors, music starts near after.
