For the Weekend of January 22nd - 25th, 2009
Good afternoon, dear Houston. Please forgive us for not posting on Monday - we're still getting used to our new regimen. Hopefully, you won't allow any personal angst you might feel over this little scheduling error to fester and turn into deep-set resentment against H-Town Rock. We thank you for your continued commitment to this feature, this city, and the wonderful music that fills this city on a regular basis. There are some great shows this weekend, so get out there and show Space City some love!
Thursday, January 22nd
Bob Schneider at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Brett Dennen and Erin McCarley at Warehouse Live
Papa Grows Funk and Beetle at The Continental Club
Friday, January 23rd
As exciting as it might be to see one of rock music's more epic debates put to the test over at Fitzgerald's (though in the guise of tribute bands ramping up the cheese), there are actual active acts performing on this night that truly deserve your attention. The key show tonight will most likely The Wild Moccasins show over at Walter's, a show that will not only be energetic, raucous, and attended by our favorite barista and other hip twentysomethings, but also features one of H-Town Rock's favorite local bands - Buxton. Also, KRS-One will bring his always entertaining and outspoken brand of hip-hop to The Meridian, while Warehouse Live will be bouncing with the fresh Latin rock sounds of Austin's Grupo Fantasma and Vallejo.
Black Dog (Led Zeppelin tribute band) and Slip Kids (The Who tribute band) at Fitzgerald's
Freddie Steady Five, 3 Balls of Fire, and Molly and the Ringwalds at The Continental Club
Grupo Fantasma, Vallejo, and Yoko Mono at Warehouse Live
Hayes Carll at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Krista Vossler, Gretchen Schmaltz, Sarah Van Buskirk, Hungry Villagers, and Education at Avant Garden
KRS-One at The Meridian
The Wild Moccasins CD Release Show: featuring Buxton, Teenage Kicks, and DJ ADR at Walter's on Washington
Saturday, January 24th
It looks to be a busy day around Houston, as there look to be four different special events competing against each other, all filled with quality local music. The sonic diversity on tap ranges from the hard rock of Before...There Was Rosalyn at The Meridian to the folk-meets-soul-meets-dance Houston Press extravaganza, not to mention the style blurring going down at Fitzdown. Granted, if none of that suits your fancy, you're more than welcome to head on over to Verizon Wireless to experience the gorgeous vocal work of John Legend and Estelle.
