The 37th annual Chevron Houston Marathon took place this past Sunday, on the kind of beautiful, crisp winter's day that makes the Houston summers totally worth it. The over 200,000 spectators and 15,000 runners who turned out for the race make it difficult to imagine that the first Houston Marathon in 1972 had a mere 113 competitors.
Today, the race is by far the most popular one-day sporting event in the city, which shows in the amazing photographs that were contributed to the Houstonist Flickr Photo Pool. Below are some of our favorite pictures that our readers took during the marathon.
The competitors all ran for a variety of reasons, but Army Captain Ivan Castro runs marathons to inspire those who -- like him -- are disabled but refuse to let that disability interfere with their lives. Captain Castro lost his sight while serving in Iraq but hasn't let that keep him from running five marathons since recovering from his injuries.

From the photographer's description: "This guy saw me taking pictures, and turned and had this big grin...all at mile 25...and you can see on his watch that his time is 2:43...dude was fast and happy."

Thanks to all our readers (and early risers!) who braved the throngs on Sunday and took pictures, and then contributed them to the Houstonist Flickr Photo Pool. And many congratulations to our readers that competed in the marathon, the half marathon and the 5k. You're far better athletes than we are!
