Lawndale Art Center's galleries have been closed for a while due to new installation projects, and tonight's the night of the contemporary art center's re-opening.

Four new exhibitions will go on display tonight, running through February 28:

In the Absense of Space
Kathy Kelley takes on consumerism, uncontrolled growth and consumption, and the lack of fulfillment associated with constant wanting, with sculptures made from consumer refuse.

found sound (Public Music Reconnaissance)
This is an installation work by Patrick Renner featuring telephone poles outfitted with moodified music boxes that react to the items used to hang notices on the poles (nails, staples, tape) to prpoduce a random melody.

Highway 71 Revisted
Photographs of Barry Stone's family, fake flowers and more. Lawndale has made an mp3 related to this exhibit available for download on their website so you can upload it to your favorite music player and listen during your visit.

Battle Play Set
Another installation piece where artist Aram Nagle has created a combination Jungle Gym/war field, complete with toy guys and soldiers, as a dioramic parody of war.

Tonight's opening reception takes place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Artists' talks will begin at 6 p.m.
