Daily-ist Wednesday: Volunteer at The Bike Shop

012809_bikeshop.jpg Do you remember your first bicycle? The freedom it provided, the hours of entertainment and exercise and escape from home and family. If you'd like to give that gift to someone else, the Bike Shop is where you need to be tonight.

Organized by Workshop Houston, the Bike Shop is a do-it-yourself recycled bike repair lab in the Third Ward where volunteers help residents of all ages fix and rebuild bikes for personal use.

The workshop includes an Earn-A-Bike program whereby participants can get a bike by salvaging working parts from an unusable bike and wheel, learn to patch a tube, and then fix a bike to be donated to a local charity.

If you have experience working on bicycles, you can volunteer in the Bike Shop. If you're new to bike mechanics, you can volunteer with Earn-A-Bike and learn along with the participants. The Third Ward Bike Shop is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3-7 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m to 4 p.m.
