H-Town Rock

For the Weekend of January 29th - February 1st, 2009

One of the primary concerns we regularly contend with here at H-Town Rock is whether or not we're giving appropriate coverage to the singers, groups, and bands deemed to be of greatest interest to our readers. We know you're reading our words, since you've been great about leaving comments, but if our primary mission is to provide the best possible information and commentary on the Houston music calendar, we want to do our best to take care of you. This feature exists to inform and entertain, so let us know if we've been failing at either (or both!) of those aims.

Thursday, January 29th
Los Campesinos and Titus Andronicus at Walter's on Washington
The Misfires, Lazy Horse, and The Neptones at Rudyard's
Steve Poltz at McGonigel's Mucky Duck

This evening looks to be one filled with loud, furious noises wherever you might go, pleasing the ears of a wide variety of rock music fans all around our city. Our crazy roommate will be doing double duty between Fitzdown and Last Concert Café, while our favorite barista will be screaming his heart out to the music of The Jonbenét over at Walter's. Where are we going to be on this night? If we're lucky, we'll be slamming back whiskey while we enjoy the sounds of Hell City Kings at Rudyard's - every now and then, we all need a bit of driving punk music in our lives.

Come See My Dead Person and Wino Vino at Last Concert Cafe
Drop Trio at Avant Garden
D.R.U.M., James Reese Band, and Molly and the Ringwalds at The Continental Club
Fired For Walking at Fitzdown
Fucked Up, Iron Age, The Jonbenét, and Black Congress at Walter's on Washington
Hell City Kings, American Fangs, Arcane Flowers, and The Back Alley Sluts at Rudyard's
Los Skarnales and Zydepunks at Fitzgerald's
T.S.O.L., Black President, Bark Hard, and Blackmarket Syndicate at The Meridian

Upon learning that Arena Theater would be putting on a show filled with a host of musical icons, we immediately wondered if a sizable minority of white hipsters would be ironically attending this event. Yes, we know that's a crass, tacky, and stereotypical thought to have, but don't hold it against us. Anyone who is a student of music history would do well to be present at any show that highlights the groundbreaking talents of Kurtis Blow and Slick Rick. Besides, do you really want to join all of those khaki-shorts-and-sandals-wearing Dave Matthews Band fans over at the O.A.R. show at House of Blues? We didn't think so.

The Flamin' Hellcats and Los Texmaniacs at The Continental Club
MV & EE, The Linus Pauling Quartet, and Wols at Rudyard's
O.A.R. and Eric Hutchinson at House of Blues
Pioneers of Hip-hop: featuring Kurtis Blow, MC Lyte, Slick Rick, Sugar Hill Gang, and Whodini at Arena Theatre
The Rafters and Mark Searcy at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar
Ume CD Release Show: featuring Bring Back The Guns and Woozyhelmet at Walter's on Washington

Sunday, February 1st
Annihilation Time, No Talk, and ANS at Rudyard's
Meridian's Reggae/Ska Fest: featuring 7th Generation, The Big Takeover Soundsystem, Eleven Fingered Charlie, The Failed Attempt, Idiginis, Middlefinger, Ryan Scroggins and The Trenchtown Texans, Shark Attack, Los Skarnales, The Slackers, Subrosa Union, and The Suspects at The Meridian
