Help Wanted: Call for Writers

Now Hiring Sign Houstonist is looking for new contributors and wants you to be on the team. We know what you're thinking. "WOOHOO! Where do I sign-up?" Not so fast, kid.

We take an approach that's not unlike dating. We are picky. We are looking for a commitment. And, we are still single. Here's what we need from you.

You have to want to be part of the team. And, by "want to be part of the team" we mean you need to have the dedication and bandwidth to contribute at least five posts per month. Got that?

You need to be passionate about Houston. Each staff member loves living in the 77XXX. Like really, really, really loves living in Houston. You're plugged in to what's going on around town so much so that people come to you seek your opinion on everything, all the time.

You are high energy and low maintenance. We need people that are exicited to get things done and deliver quality on demand. Fade in to a cozy office setting. A phone call is in progress. "We need a fatass can of Quality at the office STAT!" "Aiight, then...." "Hello? Hello?" The sound of a doorbell is heard in the background.

Think you're ready to jump on the train to Internet fame? Swell. Click through the jump to read the fine print.

Now that you know what we need, you're probably wondering what's in it for you.

  • Exposure. Your Houstonist contributions will be seen thousands of readers around the world. Most staff members benefit from this by getting high fived at happy hours and recognized at the car wash. Supremely talented staff members regularly book freelance gigs and occassionally make the jump to full-time paid writing gigs.
  • Opportunity. As a staff member, you can contribute content from any area of interest in that thick skull of yours. Plus, being tied to the Houstonist brand goes a long way when you're trying to book an interview with a local celebrity or get a peek at that hot new restaurant.

Still interested? Solid. Here's what you need to do. Email us answers the following questions.

  1. What's your name?
  2. How long have you been in Houston, and what brought you to town?
  3. What are you favorite places to go? Favorite things to do?
  4. What kind of content would you like to contribute to Houstonist? Why? What makes you an authority on that topic?
  5. What else do we need to know?
  6. Why should we add you to the team?
Be sure to include a sample post for Houstonist. Target it to be between 200 - 400 words. The topic should be something other Houstonians would be interested in reading. Keep it local. Please also include up to two other writing samples in the body of your email - Copy & Paste style. Do not include attachments or links to blogs.

We won't be able to send out personal replies due to the large number of submissions we receive. But, we'll let you know we got your email. New staff members will be whisked away to Houstonist Boot Camp no later than February 20th.
