Where Ya Watching the Super Bowl?

SB43_mark_1_rgb.jpg Tomorrow is the biggest day in professional football: two sets of grown men in protective padding, brain buckets and tight pants will go head-to-head to see which is the best team in the nation. Whether you feel this to be the most spectacular sporting event, a good excuse to party like a rock star or you care less about it, but, you dig the commercials, most of the nation will be glued -- beverage in one hand, nacho in the other -- to the television.

Some will be watching on a fabulous television, purchased for the occasion and returned on Monday because "it was too big for the place you had in mind" (pool idea: whoever is farthest from the final score has to return that beyotch). Some of you will be out at a bar or restaurant with a group of friends and strangers, yelling at the players (they can't hear you, you know, just saying). Others will be at private parties held by friends, neighbors or friends of friends and their neighbors. A small minority will be trying to avoid the spectacle all together, wondering where the civilized can have a nice meal with out the sporting "vulgarity" that hounds them on this one day of the year.

If you are looking for a good spot to watch the game, never fear, options abound. You can't sling a dead cat without hitting a place of business that will have the game on. Houstonist is doing some rounds -- neighborhood bar with a potluck feast, friends hosting a party -- and we'll be excersizing our options and our mandibles (not to mention our vocal cords -- we yell at the game, too, who cares if they can't hear, people in earshot need to know that Warner is a henpecked has-been, in our opinion). Oops, we just gave away our pick to win.

The options, as we see them, are: see-and-be-seen sports bars (like FoxSports or Champps), pubs (if your team is sucking at least the beer won't), local bars (like The Spot) and "Average Joe" sports bars (like KC's or SRO). Should you hit the bar of your favorite restaurant, and plan to sit there for four hours, please be prepared to tip accordingly. After all, the waitstaff loses the opportunity to turn tables -- they don't get "special pay" for special events.

Looking for more ideas? They're below the jump.

Some suggestions we have other than those listed above are:

  • Coaches

  • McElroy's Pub

  • Grif's

  • Richmond Arms

  • Stag's Head

  • the bar at your neighborhood Los Tios

  • Palace Lanes bar (it's nicely redone and the burgers rock)

  • PJ's Sports Bar (it's potluck, so bring food, fool!)

  • The Tavern

  • BW3

  • Wings 'N' More

  • Wing Spot

  • or the closest neighborhood bar, where everybody knows your name.

If you find yourself surrounded by douchebags and posers, just migrate a few blocks (no zoning in H-Town, ya know).

01312009_football.jpg Regardless of where you watch, be safe and don't be a dumbass. This is one of those long events where the tendency to overindulge is not usually the intended outcome but a by-product of a prolonged period of potential consumption. To keep from looking like a lightweight and/or a drunken idiot (like we haven't done that) in front of your peeps, order a "coke" in a highball glass, or a club soda with lime if you have overserved yourself slightly. Or, be a gameday hero: offer yourself up to the football gods as "designated driver" and save your friends from a less than optimum end to the evening. Oh, and keep your nipples to yourself -- Houston doesn't need another "nipplegate".
