Even though only a paltry 34% of Houston's television-watching households watched yesterday's Super Bowl -- the second-lowest amount out of 56 other cities -- those 34% were in for a delicious, sleazy treat in the form of this commercial for the mysteriously-named Ashley Madison Agency:
In case you're wondering, yes -- that, friends, is an ad for a website that promotes adultery. And, yes -- it aired during the Super Bowl, a time which is usually reserved for the best commercials that Madison Avenue can slap together. And, yes -- it only aired in Texas.
Banned by the NFL for being, well, completely and utterly tasteless, the commercial was still aired by our local NBC affiliate, as well as many others across the state thanks in part to the company's CEO purchasing local airtime to run the ad. While people across the country (and in Texas, for that matter) were shocked at the decidedly anti-family-values commercial managing to air in one of the reddest of red states, Ashley Madison's CEO pointed out the fact that Texas has been the fastest-growing market for his service and had this to say:
In Texas, men love their football and women love to cheat!
In response, Houstonist has merely this to say:
*facepalm*
