For the Weekend of 02/05-08-2009
We are excited for this upcoming weekend here at H-Town Rock, because there's nothing that gets us happier than struggling to decide which shows around town we should attend. We, as a city, should take pride in weekends like this one, when it's near impossible to be present for all of the good music that will be played by some of our top bands. Our only recommendation - nay, our primary commandment - is that you make your way to at least one of these shows over the course of the next few days. You owe it to yourself and your city to experience the music that has been made available.
Thursday, February 5th
With all apologies to the fine folks performing at other venues about town (especially the Neville Brothers), we're going to suggest that people head out to The Mink to hear the music of listenlisten, Au, and The Wild Moccasins. The live shows of all three groups are highly lauded about town, and The Wild Moccasins have recently released a six-song EP that's received rave reviews in many local press outlets. So, unless you have some sort of commitment to those other clubs and/or bands, you don't have any decent excuse not to be present.
The Bridge and Beetle at The Continental Club
Dave Barnes and Drew Holcomb at Warehouse Live
Dr. John and the Neville Brothers at House of Blues
The Lash Outs at Rudyard's
listenlisten, Au, and The Wild Moccasins at The Mink
Ryan Monableau and Josh Grider at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Friday, February 6th
While some might think it highly entertaining to go relive their days in the '80s on the Sunset Strip with L.A. Guns, we're going to make our way over to Rudyard's for the waves of reverb, delay, and distortion created by The Appleseed Cast. Granted, we're also eager to see how Golden Cities conveys the proggy-synth sounds of its debut record in live setting, but if the talent level of that record is any indication, the group is more than capable. Then again, if you're like our crazy roommate, what with his affinity for all manner of local-grown hard rock, then chances are you'll run into him at Fitzgerald's. If you can distract him long enough from singing along with the band, drinking, and playing air guitar, do tell him that we said hello.
The Appleseed Cast, Golden Cities, and The Hungry Villagers at Rudyard's
Bob's Birthday Bash: Featuring L.A. Guns, Low Man's Joe, and Laidlaw at The Meridian
Honky and Molly and the Ringwalds at The Continental Club
Mother's Anthem, Sleeping With Giants, The Last Great Assault, and Kill The Theory at Fitzgerald's
Randy Weeks at McGonigel's Mucky Duck
Susan Tedeschi and James Hunter at House of Blues
Saturday, February 7th
Folks, this is the kind of night that tortures and titillates music fans: everyone of these shows is worth your time and effort to attend, but unless you have a decent source of income and either a time machine or teleportation device, you probably won't make it to more than two of these shindigs. For our money, since we do love supporting the best and brightest local acts about town, we're going to suggest celebrating the 100th Issue of Free Press Houston over at Numbers along with The Tontons and Tha Fucking Transmissions (not to mention the raw rock fury that is Monotonix), along with several other bands and well-wishers. However, if you do decide to make it out to Rudyard's for The Western Civilization or Walter's for Spain Colored Orange, we're not going to fault you for that choice. Just know that you're not the only person in Houston who struggled with who they were going to see on this night.
Don Caballero, DD/MM/YYYY, Novox, and By the End of Tonight at The Meridian
Free Press Houston Issue 100 Celebranza: Featuring Monotonix, State Radio, The Tontons, American Fangs, Tha Fucking Transmissions, and Rebelution at Numbers
Gov't Mule and The Disco Biscuits at House of Blues
Paris Falls, Spain Colored Orange, Al-Shire and the Henchmen, and Yougenious at Walter's on Washington
The Western Civilization, The Pons, Your Kisses Cause Crashes, and Guitars at Rudyard's
Sunday, February 8th
Sunken Teeth, Dark Castle, We Both Know, Campfire Stories, and Litost at Walter's on Washington
