Houstonist has heard this saying — "There are two things that are recession proof: books and booze." Well, booze might be doing okay, but books are having a hard time these days.
Paper ain't cheap, and despite the fact that reading is one of the best forms of entertainment, taking into consideration the time/cost/enjoyability ratio, books are a investment some people aren't willing to make.
Thank goodness Houston has a large and well-stocked library network. You know the library, right? It's the place where you can go to get books and rent movies for free. We have a newly-renovated one, downtown. And one that's probably walking distance from wherever you are.
It's been a busy weekend. Lots of things to do, plenty of beautiful weather. Today, you had to go back to work, the sky is grey, nothing sounds better than being at home, shut in from the troubles and stresses of the world. Just a typical Monday. It also happens to be Read a Book in the Bathtub Day. Yes, such a thing exists.
So instead of going out tonight, spending your hard-earned dollars on booze or cheap thrills, Houstonist has this suggestion: go to the library after work. Most of the Houston libraries are open late on Monday nights. Get a book you've been meaning to read. Take it home, run yourself a bubble bath. Lights some candles, even. No one has to know. Crawl into the tub, take half an hour to yourself, and just read. It's that simple. Read a book tonight.
