Who Will Make Houstonist's Mt. Rushmore of Sports?

ESPN did their take last week on the four best athlete's from each state. For Texas, Lance Armstrong, Earl Campbell, Nolan Ryan and Tom Landry were selected as Texas' Mt. Rushmore.

Well, that got Houstonist to thinking: who would be Houston's Mt. Rushmore? The waiting will end tomorrow.

Starting Tuesday through Friday, Houstonist will release one Houston sports icon to represent the Bayou City. The athlete must be a native of Houston or must have played for a Houston team or at one of Houston's finest universities.

Who do think you think will make it? Tune in tomorrow.

Hakeem Olajuwon is a must for any Houston sports legends list.

He is a candidate. What are your thoughts on Drexler, George Foreman, Mario Andretti?

Although Drexler is a UH Phi Slamma Jamma alum and he won a championship with the Rockets, I'm not sure he counts as a Houston legend. He's significant of course, but him being a legend is debatable. Honestly, I prefer Matt Bullard.

Drexler is hands down a Houston legend. Played high school at Sterling, played at UH put them back on the national scene. Came back home and won a championship with the Rockets. An NBA All-Star for many years and a Hall of Famer.

Yeah, I think you're right. I was using Hakeem as a yardstick, nobody really compares. He wasn't a very good coach at UH though.

And speaking of UH basketball, Olajuwon or Drexler don't compare to what Elvin Hayes did while he was there. 31 PPG, '68 National Player of the Year and three straight Final Four appearances.

Mario Andretti??? Does he even have a Houston connection? I was thinking more along the lines of A.J. Foyt!

Ha! You are correct, sir. It's been a long day.

Hands down.
No question.
Etch it in stone.
Carl Lewis.
End of discussion.

Carl Lewis. I like the way you think.
