Hopefully, the 2008 Texans season will be remembered by history as the first year of the Steve Slaton Era (not for any combination of the words "Rosenfels" and "helicopter"), as the rookie from West Virginia gave Texans fans their first look at a marquee RB since the teams inception.
The Slaton Era came one step closer today when the Texans cut loose backfield albatross Ahman Green, giving him his unconditional release. Green was signed after several successful seasons in Green Bay, but by the time he made it to the Bayou City, he was obviously well past his prime. For every time he'd show glimmers of his past glory, he would either miss a game with an injury or put up a stellar 30 yards on 15 rushes stat line.
The release of Green and linebacker Morlon Greenwood frees up significant cap space for the Texans, which will hopefully put them in a position to afford free agent Dunta Robinson, who is due a significant pay increase after five years of All-Pro level service to the team.
