Spring fever in affect yet? Houstonist has some ideas for free and cheap events to cool you down.
FRIDAY
- 6:30 p.m. — The Blues According to Lightnin' Hopkins at Project Rowhouse, 2521 Holman Street.
- 9 p.m. — Stanley and the Record Playing Time Machines at Saute, 2303 Richmond, 77098. No cover.
SATURDAY
- 9 a.m. — Saturday Cooking Classes at the Green Plum Cooking School. Monica Pope, the brains behind Beavers and t'afia, is offering *free* cooking classes using local ingredients readily available at the Midtown Farmer's Market, at t'afia every Saturday morning. Be there by 9 a.m. to sign up. The class starts at 9:30 a.m. and can only accommodate 45 people.
- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — MFAH Member Appreciation Loading Dock Book Sale. Deep discounts on clearance items from the MFAH's wonderful gift shop. Event is free to attend but only open to museum members. How much you spend on goodies is up to you.
- 5 to 7 pm — Claire Fontaine opening at Project Row House/Galeria Perdida, 2521 Holman. Fontaine is a Paris-based collective artist; the collective was founded in 2004. After lifting her name from a popular brand of school notebooks, Claire Fontaine declared herself a "readymade artist" and began to elaborate a version of neo-conceptual art that often looks like other people's work. Free admission.
- 6-10 pm — Altered Realities, Elder Street Gallery, 1101 Elder Street. Surrealistic art in this group show feat. Bert Long, Jesse Lott, Anastasia Sams, Christan Perkins, T. Smith and others. Free. 1101 Elder Street.
- 7-10 p.m. — Wheels and Tires, Art Car Museum, 140 Heights Blvd. Exhibit consists of a steel vehicular sculpture series, reconstructed road debris drawings, paintings and sculptures and a series of tread integrated paintings. Free admission.
