Sagemont Wins Mega-Cross Contest

sagemont_022009.jpg Back in July of last year we discussed Grace Community Church's plans to build two enormous crosses at both of its campuses - one on I-45 north in the Woodlands/Spring and the other at I-45 south between Scarsdale and Dixie Farm Road. While waiting for these to go up, Grace's south campus rival Sagemont Church put up a 170-foot tall cross just a few miles south. The huge white cross on the western side of I-45 and the beltway is a testament not only to how Christian Sagemont is, but also how much faster they are at putting up large symbols.

The cross, which also includes an amphitheater and 2,500 square foot platform that is open around the clock, is part of the Living Proof Project which they describe as "landscaping that includes a master-planned design complete with two lakes, prayer garden, and places to meditate and worship God the Creator" and "a beautiful new building that will house a 2,400-seat worship auditorium, adult discipling rooms, prayer room, bookstore, library, coffee shop, reception area, foyers for fellowship, fabulous restrooms, wide halls, and much more. This 120,000 square foot building, designed by Shanks Architects in Dallas, will allow Sagemont to embrace our core value of excellence as we worship together and equip people for life and service."

Even though they beat out Grace, others have been marveling at the hugeness of the crosses in Groom, TX, Effingham, IL, Edmond, OK, and Royal Blue, TN for some time now.

We don't know the cost of the cross (but 90 tons of steel can't be cheap), and it doesn't look ornate like Grace's plan, but we imagine that a ton of other things could have happened with that money. For what it's worth, the similar looking cross in Effingham cost about $1,000,000 according to Keep the Faith, although it is 28 feet taller and looks a little more hefty.

Can you imagine if Jesus was tortured in an Electric Chair instead of a roman crucifix. Would we all be mounting huge Electric Chairs up on the side of the road in front of churches? Christinsanity.
