Daily-ist Wednesday: Pirate Radio USA Screening

022509_PirateRadioUSA.jpg Does Houston have any pirate radio stations? Houstonist is not sure but we would like to be enlightened, because the only reference we have for pirate radio (that is, radio unregulated by the FCC) is this Christian Slater opus that seethes 1990s ambiance so thickly it's both impossible to watch and impossible not to watch.

We're hoping tonight's Houston Indymedia documentary screening can shed a little more light on the underground world of illegal radio in America.

In the documentary Pirate Radio USA, DJ’s Him and Her take you on a journey inside rogue radio stations across the country...

to see why Americans defy federal law to free the radio airwaves. On the way see the rise of Big Media, the growth of Citizen Media to encounter it, and witness their showdown over the truth during the 1999 World Trade Organization meetings in Seattle.

The film will be screened at the Rice University Cinema. There is a $10 suggested donation but no one will be turned away. All proceeds from the screening will benefit Houston Indymedia and Houston's independent radio station, KPFT 90.1 FM.
