H-Town Rock

For the Weekend of March 5th - 8th, 2009

Good afternoon Houston. Are you ready for a weekend overflowing with music everywhere you might turn? It is our contention that, if you are unable to find something to do this weekend, you simply don't want to do anything. Seriously - all manner of country, rock, blues, R&B, pop, indie, and punk will be on display throughout the Bayou City over the next few days and it is your obligation to enjoy it. From prominent local groups to well-known national acts, the music is out there for your enjoyment. Get into it!

ErykahBadu.jpg The first discussion we must have regarding tonight's entertainment options is whether we should partake of the iconic voice of Gladys Knight or delight in the music of Erykah Badu. Who books these competing acts on the same night? We would rather not have to between old-school and new-school (with decided old-school flavors). So what are we going to do? We're going to be over at Walter's for Benjamin Wesley's CD Release Show - not only will it be a great night of music, but there's going to be BBQ in the parking lot (and you won't have to fight the crowds at the Rodeo for it).

Big Head Todd and the Monsters and Joan Jones at House of Blues

GoldenCities.jpg Let's get this bit of information out there from the start: as much as we'd like to attend the Pajama Kegger to see some of our fair city's top young acts perform, you don't want to see H-Town Rock walking around in our pajamas. Thus, we're probably going to join our favorite barista over at Walter's for the dulcet ambient rock tones of Golden Cities. Our crazy roommate will most likely be out at Fitz's hanging out with his buddies in Deep Ella, while our nouveaux kicker brother will be up in Conroe all day for Ray Wylie Hubbard and The Gougers. Then again, if anyone wants to brave the hardcore kids that will be swarming upon Numbers on this night, have at it - we're too old for that kind of activity.

Deep Ella, Windsor Drive (CD Release Show), Mechanical Boy, The Canvas Waiting, and The 71's at Fitzgerald's

JonasBrothers.jpg
We almost ignored Sunday, but it was too hard to pass up the chance to mock Hoobastank and the Jonas Brothers. Even though these jokes usually write themselves, we must once again declare that Hoobastank is probably the worst band name of all time (yes, even worse than those atrocious gore-and-death-soaked metal band names). Furthermore, as anyone who also saw them "perform" with Stevie Wonder at The Grammys can attest, the Jonas Brothers make Hanson look like Radiohead. It's so very scary what contemporary tweens look to for musical content.
