Houstonist: Bartender of the Month

Beginning this month, Houstonist will hit the bars to find the most interesting and unique bartenders in Houston. March’s bartender of the month is Jeremy from Kelvin Arms in Rice Village. To nominate your favorite drink-slinger, email mark@houstonist.com and tell us what makes your nomination worthy of the title.

031009_marchbotm.gif How long have you been bartending?
About six years or so.

What is your signature drink?
Currently the German Bear Attack, it has been described as Big Red gum X 1,000 or 1 million depending on how many you have.

Without any names being used, what is your best bar story?
My attorney has advised me not to comment on this matter, though I can say I had never seen a grown man shit himself until I bartended. Now the count is at two times.

What question do you find being asked the most?
"What's good?" or "How do I get upstairs(to Benjy's)?"

What drives you toward the lifestyle of being a bartender?
Basically I like the service industry... I like the hours, the money, and getting to meet tons of people.

If you were not a bartender, what would you be?
Independently wealthy, for sure.

What is the worst thing a person can do when they walk in your bar for
the first time?

Stumble up to the bar and puke?

How would you characterize your regulars?
A diverse group that intermingles... We have college students, professors, lawyers, engineers, sandwich makers, waiters, bartenders -- who you wouldn't think have too much in common... Behold the power of the Kelvin Arms.

What TV shows do you follow, if any?
Sportscenter...does that count? Actually I follow Lost, despite all the efforts Comcast has made to prevent me from watching it. They're Comcastic!

What is the best song you have heard on the jukebox most recently? What song is played too much?
Recently I have gotten into the band Muse, mostly from hearing Knights of Cydonia. Something that is still being played three to four times a night is Paper Planes by M.I.A.. Good song but come on...

How do you relax after a long day's work?
I donate a percentage of my wages to Golden Tee, alcohol and other important charities.

What is the secret of life?
Melted cheese.
