Big fans of Fearless Critic we are. And, we're big fans of free. Now the two have come together like PB&J, and we're preparing to enjoy it - milk optional.
The Fearless Critic Online Austin Restaurant Guide will be free for the duration of South by Southwest. The move is clearly meant as a PR ploy to drive folks to the online content, but it also should be considered a public service for you Houstonians traveling to the capitol. Austin's great and all, but their restaurant scene can't hold a candle to ours. And, SxSW, like life, is too short to eat at crappy restaurants.
Here are a few dining spots that we recommend checking out during your jaunt to Austin. Feel free to check that with FearlessCritic.com if you don't believe us, but you risk hurting our feelings. And, you don't want that.
American: Dirty Martin's Place, 2808 Guadalupe St. Order this: grilled cheese, tater tots and a few beers.
Burgers: Casino El Camino, 517 E. 6th St. Order this: cheeseburger and a White Russian. Eat at the rail upstairs for the best people watching while you scarf down your burger.
Late Night: Magnolia Cafe, 1920 S. Congress Ave. Order this: Love Veggies and a water. Hydration is your friend.
Pizza: Cipollina, 1213 W. Lynn St. Order this: Bacon & Gorgonzola pizza. Thank us via email when you wake up from your goodness coma.
Sushi: Uchi, 801 S. Lamar Blvd. Order this: ask Chef Tyson Cole to freestyle something. Don't forget the sake to help you get over the sticker shock. Uchi is spendy but well worth it.
Thai: Madam Mam's, 2514 Guadalupe St. Order this: anything on the menu. Please do not steal their colorful chopsticks.

Week Around The Ists

For Thai food, go a little bit farther north on Guadalupe to Thai Kitchen. It's way better than Madam Mam's.
I respectfully disagree. There's more variety on the menu at Madam Mam's although Thai Kitchen is probably a bit more traditional. TK's food is solid, but the service was horrible the last time I was there (~6 weeks ago). That said, I usually head to TK if the line at Madam Mam's is too long or if I can find a parking spot.
uhhhh - austin food always taste like amber oil. gross.
Very Pleased you listed these. (these where ALL the places I avoided to eat - especially during packed SXSW when I lived there) yeah! Can't wait to avoid these crowded and dirty places this SXSW. (exception Cipolina, never heard of it)
Care to share the places you like in Austin?
Nope.
Thanks. Way to be credible.
I love Austin and lived there 10 years. I don't want to be elbow to elbow with out of towners in my favorite little food haunts. Stick with that list above you'll be just fine.
