Houston's first library was a Carnegie Library and in 1926 was replaced by the Julia Ideson Building. In 1976 the Jesse H. Jones building was complete and the central library moved into its new home leaving this building as a repository for library archives, manuscripts, and the Texas and Local History Department.

The Ideson building is also home to a well known ghost, Julius Frank Cramer, who thanks to inquisitive "ghost hunters" has his own file on record at the Ideson building.
