After years of unflattering rankings on the Fattest Cities in America annual survey, Houston has shown signs of interest in trimming waistlines without sacrificing taste.
Remember the days of seeing fad diets sneak onto the menus of your favorite restaurants? Atkins, the South Beach Diet, and the Zone are only a few that gave us such wonders as the ‘bunless burger’ at Burger King and other meat-tastic blunders. However, the latest wave in dining seems to be getting us back to basics. No more eliminating important pieces of the food pyramid, just plain old healthy eating. We’ve noticed somewhat of a ‘healthy eating corridor’ develop in the 77098. This area contains some old favorites and new, like My Fit Foods and the recently opened Ruggles Green. Here’s the dish on our favorite dishes:
Zoë's Kitchen (3701 S. Shepherd, 77098 with two new locations coming to San Felipe and Washington): Pretty standard selection of sandwiches and salads along with a few hot plates. They do offer a few different chicken dinners for four, all priced at $26.95 and made to order.
Ruggles Green (2311 W. Alabama, 77098) Newly opened with a delicious menu featuring organic and all natural ingredients. Try the Spicy Southwest Smoked Chicken Pasta with Quinoa Pasta, Smoked Natural Hudson Farm Chicken, Blackbeans, Tomatoes, Jalapeños, Roasted Garlic, Queso Fresco, Sweet Plantains & Slow-Cooked Organic Tomato Sauce with Vegetable Stock- finished with Sweet Cream Butter and Chopped Cilantro.
My Fit Foods (S. Shepherd, 77098 with two other locations on Beechnut Dr and Memorial at Kirkwood): My Fit Foods is not a restaurant, but made to order meals in a variety of sizes. Check out the website to place an order and pick up at the location nearest you.
Oldies but goodies:
Hobbit Café (2243 Richmond Ave, 77098) We love sipping an ice cold blueberry tea on the patio of this little hide-away. Try the Avocado Burger with heaping amounts of fresh avocado.
Brasil (2604 Dunlavy, 77006) Last year, Brasil expanded their kitchen and menu to include even more tasty selections. The Brasil BLT is a classic with Avocado and Garlic Aioli. Order it on Focaccia or Ciabatta bread.
Empire Café (1732 Westheimer Rd, 77098) We usually order from the daily specials, which always feature an entrée, two pastas, a sandwich, soup or salad to choose from. Their half sandwich and salad or soup combo is a great deal.
Ziggy’s Healthy Grill (2202 W. Alabama, 77098 also 302 Fairview, 77006) Ziggy’s mantra is “Feel good about what you eat.” Try their new Spinach and Artichoke dip with Whole Wheat Chips and Cucumber Rounds or their Sweet Potato Fries.
Field of Green’s Healthy Cuisine (2320 W. Alabama, 77098): Vegan and vegetarian friendly. Most of the menu is vegetarian and many items can be made vegan if they are not already. Try the grilled zucchini and squash quesadillas with pico and jack cheese in an organic whole-wheat tortilla (also comes with a salad.)
Finally, when you’ve had your fill of healthy eating, remember Monday is half price cake day at Empire, some of the best cake in the city.
