It's the final weekend of the rodeo, so if you haven't had enough parking woes, fried food or sweaty crowds get your starched little heinie down to Reliant for your last chance.
For today's Weekend-ist, Houstonist took our "What are you doing?" question to the mean streets of Twitter. Followers' replies are mixed in with our own recommendations below.
UPDATED: Doh! Commenter monkeypanda points out that the Tour de Houston is actually on Sunday this year, for the first time since its inception. If you're riding, keep this in mind: Houstonist has heard it's bad form to pass the mayor.
FRIDAY
- 8:30 p.m. — BLP TV for Stoners wherein a Houston theater troupe tackles the world of public access television. There is a second show at 10:30 p.m. Pay what you want. Midtown Arts Center, 3415 LaBranch. (Hat tip to @kidornery)
SATURDAY
- 8 a.m. to noon — Babes on Boards clinic and demo for female skateboarders. At Jamail Skate Park, 103 Sabine (parking at Fonde Rec Center). Free, but a helmet is required. If you have your own board, bring it, but if you don't, come anyway.
- 11 a.m. — 2009 Beer Bike at Rice University. Free, and crazy. (HT @NotANinja)
Coincidentally, this happens on the same day as the Tour de Houston, which begins at 7 a.m. and costs $35 to ride in. - 6 p.m. — Houston Roller Derby Season Opener featuring the Bayou City Bosses$ hosting Hurricane Alley from Corpus Christi and The Burlesque Brawlers taking on the Psych Ward Sirens, at the new home of HRD, Kicks Indoor Soccer and Gym, 611 Shepherd Drive. Tickets are $12 and the bouts begin at 7 p.m. (HT @jenxer)
SUNDAY
- Noon — Humane Society K-9 Fun Run and Walk, one of the few runs in Houston where dogs are welcome. Proceeds benefit the Humane Society and Houston's abused and homeless pets. Participation begins at $5.
- 3 p.m. — Houston Jewish Film Festival at MFAH and Jewish Community Center Houston. @funkcisco says "Iraeli-Palestinian film LEMON TREE on Sunday at 3 pm is my pick." Tickets are $9 and under.
