Daily-ist Tuesday: Rock 'n' Roll Reception

040709_rocknroll.jpg You know how when you finish a really good book or a perplexing movie and you just want to discuss it with someone, anyone? Houstonist likes to flock to Wikipedia or IMDB in those instances when no one else is around to help break down pop culture.

The Alley Theatre is offering Houstonians that chance tonight, in advance of their production of the London Critics' Circle's award-winning play "Rock 'n' Roll," which opens April 24.

The play spans two decades and three generations, beginning in 1968 as Russian tanks roll into Prague and ending with the Velvet Revolution of 1989, Czechoslovakia's overthrow of the Communist government.

In between, the play chronicles the role that rock and roll music and its ideals played on the spread of democracy.

In advance of the premier performance, The Alley's Senior Dramaturg and Director of New Play Development Mark Bly will speak about the details and history of Tom Stoppard's play. The event will take place at the Czech Center Museum Houston, a non-profit cultural community center. The play runs April 24 through May 24 at the Alley Theatre's Hubbard Stage. Tickets start at $40. Tonight's event, however, if free.
