Sam HOuston Statue
by virgil4u
Did you know that this 40 foot statue of Sam Houston was put in place in 1925 at a cost of $75,000 and is the best known work by Italian-born Texas Sculptor Enrico Filiberto Cerracchio?
Cerracchio was born in Naples, Italy in 1880. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1900 where he spent some time in New York as a laborer before moving to Houston at the urging of his doctor to help with his asthma.
Cerrachio worked mostly in bronze and marble and some of his noted sculptures include famous Texans such as General John Wharton, Governor "Ma" Ferguson, John Nance Garner and Jesse H. Jones.
Cerrachio died in 1956 while living in New York City.
