Saturday is the day to be out and about, with a couple of all-day festivals. Try to take it easy on Sunday. You'll want to sleep off that hangover.
FRIDAY
- 7 p.m. — Mango's re-opening. The tiny cantina at 403 Westheimer which has been closed since Hurricane Ike has a facelift and new personality. The sign now proclaims it a cafe, bar, live music venue and vegetarian restaurant. Sounds good. It's grand opening is tonight featuring Two Star Symphony, Robert Ellis, I am Mesmer, and The Sideshow Tramps. Cost is $8 after 8 p.m. The website has a full listing of shows almost every night in April.
- 10 p.m. — The Light Rock Express will be playing the songs your parents loved for free at the Big Top, 3714 Main Street.
SATURDAY
- 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. — It's Earth Day! Celebrate with a free show at Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney, featuring Flying Fish Sailors, Betle, Allen Oldies Band and Texodus. There will be kid-friendly and earth-friendly activities, like making art from recycled materials, and the Central City Co-op Farmer's Market will also be set up.
- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Freelance Camp Houston. Wanna work for yourself? Learn all about getting started at this free camp organized by the new work-finding site based in Houston, Werkadoo. Afterwards, join the Werkadoo staff and fellow freelancers at Caroline Collective for the official Werkadoo launch party.
- Noon to 9 p.m. — 2009 KTRU Outdoor Show featuring Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, B L A C K I E, Buxton, Thomas Helton, Infant Mortality Rate, `Laya Taal Saadhna' Tabla Ensemble, About This Product, Squincy Jones & Dayta and The Boat Show. The show is a Rice University in the field by Fondren Library. Bring a blanket and a picnic. The show is free, kid friendly and will also include album sales, face painting, food, drinks and more.
- 2 p.m. — CKC StART Graffiti Drawing 101 Class taught by Aerosol Warfare co-owner and street artist GONZO247, at Spacetaker's Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter Street.
SUNDAY
- 8 p.m. — Open Mic Night a Bohemeo's, 708 Telephone Rd. Each poet is called to read a couple of pieces, but don't be nervous, this is a decidedly low-key affair.
