A lithographed book cover by Henri Matisse, 1940, courtesy of the MFAH.
A lithograph is a form of printing in which the design is drawn onto a smooth stone or piece of metal with a grease pencil. Then, only the greased parts of the "stamp" accept ink, which can be transferred into the canvas.
The MFAH's collection of lithographic book jackets, used to cover, protect and decorate hardback books, include rare works from Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.
Wrapped in Color: Lithographic Book Covers and Jackets, 1890-1970 runs through May 25 at the MFAH. If you see the event tonight, remember, the museum is both free and open late every Thursday.
