Struggling with an ill-fitting bra can be one of the most frustrating experiences, yet how many of us have put up with this day after day? Here are some tell tale signs your bra just isn’t right for you:
• Your straps are too long and fall off your shoulders. You have to repeatedly put them back in place.
• Your straps are too short and might even be digging into your shoulders, leaving an indention or irritation. (A common misconception is to tighten the straps to give yourself an uplift. Instead, you need to wear a bra with a smaller circumference or band size.)
• Your bra is too tight around and squeezing your back in a very unflattering way. Look at your backside in the bathroom mirror with the help of a compact. (Many think this means the band is too small, more than likely it is actually too big. Try wearing a smaller band size lower on your back.)
• Your bra is too loose around i.e. the back band is not horizontal with the cups. You are not getting proper support. You are on your way to saggy-boob city.
• Your cups are loose or pucker. Your cup size is too big. Not to mention your boobs are looking weird underneath your clothes.
• Your cups are too small creating the infamous “quatro-boob” where your breasts spill over the top or sides giving the appearance of four. Your boobs are looking even weirder underneath your clothes.
• Your under wire does not encompass your full breast, including the sides (or side boob).
That being said, you have the ability to enhance your shape, posture and be comfortable by visiting an expert.
We visited the friendly staff of Intimacy located on the first level of the Galleria. Intimacy opened its doors in Houston less than a year ago after a burgeoning reputation through its locations in Atlanta (the founding store), New York City, Chicago, and Boston. Intimacy’s owner and founder, Susan Nethero, has been changing women’s lives one cup size at a time through appearances on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and NBC’s “TODAY” as well as authoring “Bra Talk: Myths and Facts”.
The fitting specialists at Intimacy take a holistic approach to sizing, meaning there is no measuring tape involved. They visually examine the breast as a whole along with how you wear your existing bra.
Our bra fit stylist immediately recognized many of the issues listed above. She first gathered a range of sizes and styles to try on. She explained bra sizing and that the cup is not universal, rather it is the ratio of breast size to width around the body. She then discussed and assisted with the correct way to put on a bra. (You want to bend forward into your bra to align it in the proper place on your body.) We tried on at least twenty different bras. In some cases, the band size and/or straps need to be adjusted further by deconstructing and sewing the bra back together. Intimacy offers this at no additional charge and the bras look and fit like they have never been altered. The result is a custom bra tailored especially for you. Also, if your bras stretch out over time, Intimacy will adjust them again at no charge. Four newly purchased bras later, we went from a 32B to a 27D.
A bra fitting at Intimacy is free. You will want to have regular fittings as breasts change over time, especially as you age and hormones flux. Another tip- when you wear a new bra, it should fit you on the loosest hook, that way you can tighten the bra as the fibers lose firmness and stretch out over time.
We highly recommend getting professional fitting ASAP. It may change your life! It certainly changed ours.
Ta-tas for now!
