Tickets to the iFest will set you back $15 but Houstonist has some options that won't break the bank.
The 31st Annual Friends of the Library book sale starts today.
All Weekend
- 31st Annual Friends of the Houston Public Library Bargain Book Sale, spanning three days and featuring more than 80,000 books for sale at the George R. Brown. Paperbacks are $1 each and hardcovers are $2, and on Sunday, fill a bag with as many books as you want for $10 a bag. It's free to get in the door.
- Houston Green Expo Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Reliant Park. The City of Houston and Gulf Coast Green sponsor the event, featuring certified green consumer products and building materials, renewable energy, energy efficiency tips, and green vehicles. Free admission.
- The Palestine International Film Festival actually started yesterday but continues throughout this weekend and next at the Rice University Media Center. Movie tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for students and seniors.
- The Pure Sound Youth Choir is staging an adaptation of South Pacific, one of Houstonist's favorite musicals, at St John's School, Buffalo Speedway south of Westheimer. The show will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday with a 2 p.m. matinee Saturday. Tickets are $10 at the door.
Friday
- 8 p.m. — Media Archeology Festival with Aurora Picture Show at the MFAH. See a live liquid light show by the artist who projected at the Fillmore East in the 1960s while everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Frank Zappa played live. He'll be doing a liquid light show while Silver Apples play live.
Saturday
- Noon to 7 p.m. — Celebrate Record Store Day with a line-up of free in-stores all day long at Cactus Records, 2110 Portsmouth. Check out Houstonist later today for more info on Record Store Day.
- 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. — Youth Voices Benefit with kayumanggi Pinoy Rock Band (Philippines), Chicana MC and indigenous traditional artist Kiawitl Xochitl, and Trio Nazim (traditional music of Kazakhstan), sponsored by the Houston Institute for Culture, at The Artery, 5401 Jackson. The Artery is in the Museum District, north of Binz on Jackson at Prospect, hidden by a canopy of trees. Sounds mysterious. Suggested donation is $5-10.
- 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. — Reverberation at Boondocks, 1417 Westheimer. A monthly DJ gig of 1960s soul, garage and psychadelic music. Free.
