Arrive to work sweaty and out of breath

051409_biketowork.jpg Tomorrow is Bike to Work Day, according to the national organization League of American Bicyclists which means hundreds of Houston-area riders will be flooding Memorial Park for a massive two-wheeled pilgrimage into Downtown (and beyond).

May is actually Bike Month and this week has been Bike to Work Week, but the purpose of Bike to Work Day (a casual Friday) is to give commuters an opportunity to see that a car-less lifestyle is actually do-able, especially in a city as infatuated with its highways as Houston.

Riders can meet at Memorial Park's South Picnic Loop at 7 a.m. tomorrow for breakfast provided by Corner Bakery Cafe and a press conference with cycle-loving Mayor Bill White. The ride starts at 7:30 a.m. and will end at the steps of City Hall. The route will go from the park along the designated bike trails to Blossom, then to the upper Shepard bridge, onto W. Dallas into downtown and will include police escorts.

On Saturday, the Houston Bikeways Program and Bike Houston will celebrate the opening of yet another bike trail opening.

The League of American Bicyclists has produced a tip guide for getting started on commuting to work by bicycle. Houstonist's biggest hint for tomorrow, which is expected to be hot: pack a change of clothes.
