Weekend-ist May 29-31: Hedwig, Found films, inflatable sculptures, Joy Dance and Animals

ALL WEEKEND

  • The Big Range Dance Festival opens tonight at 8 p.m. featuring new choreographic works by seven different choreographers. There is a second performance Saturday at 8 p.m. On Sunday, at 7 p.m. The Dance Gathering, a show featuring short works 4 minutes and under from 20 distinct choreographers will be presented. Tickets start at $14.
  • Unhinged Productions, a GLBT-friendly theater production company in Houston, finishes it's month-long run of Hedwig and the Angry Inch this weekend. Fans of the film would be remiss not to see the stage version. Tickets are $10 for students and $20 otherwise. Show is at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at FrenetiCore Theater.

FRIDAY

  • Light As Air, a temporary exhibition of interactive, inflatable sculptures by nationally-known artists, will be on display through the weekend at Discovery Green. The artists will also present workshops and free performances all weekend.
  • 7:30 p.m. — FOUND Magazine's Demin and Diamonds Tour at St. Arnold's Brewery, sponsored by the Aurora Picture Show. The creators of FOUND Magazine present an odd assortment of found films. Tickets $10 for Aurora members, $15 otherwise.
  • 8 p.m. — Esperanza Spalding, up-and-coming jazz bassist, performs at Miller Outdoor Theater. Free.

SATURDAY

  • 6 p.m. — Joy, Dance, and Giving Animals a Chance, a fundraiser co-hosted by Dominic Walsh Dance Theater, SNAP and Joy Yoga Center. The event will feature an intimate performance by Dominic Walsh Dance Theater as well as one-of-a-kind yoga demonstrations. For a $15 suggested donation at the door, guests will enjoy complimentary hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit SNAP and Dominic Walsh Dance Theater.
  • 7 p.m. — 7 Artists, 7 Car Hoods. Aerosol Warfare presents seven art car hoods painted by seven local street artists. The works will be for sale at a reception at the gallery, 2110 Jefferson Suite #113. In addition, AW will be hosting an opening of graffiti artist Gabriel Prusmack's wood and metal works.
