Sandcastle Competition in Galveston

060509_sandcastle.jpg Head to Galveston tomorrow for the 23rd Annual AIA Sandcastle Competition. The event is sponsored by the Houston Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and will be held on Galveston’s East Beach, Saturday, June 6th.

Architecture firms begin planning and designing months in advance of the competition. This year around eighty teams will be competing. The judges rate the sandcastles on originality of concept, artistic execution of the concept, technical difficulty, carving technique, and utilization of the site.

Teams will begin building at 10:00am with judging commencing at 3:00pm. The award ceremony and photography will continue until dusk. The first place team will receive the “Golden Bucket” trophy and beach bragging rights. An award also goes to the public favorite, so come out and vote!
