Sunday is the Solstice, the first day of summer, and it's a weekend full of festivals and other ways to beat the Houston heat.
FRIDAY
- Today is Juneteenth the celebration of the enforcement of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclaimation. Did you know the holiday started in Galveston? There are events throughout the state all weekend.
- 6 p.m. — White Lies Black Sheep, a film in which a black indie music fan struggles with his identity, screens tonight at Indiehouston. Tickets are $5, which includes music performances at IH's last house party, at 1816 Calumet.
SATURDAY
- It's International Surfing Day so head down to the beach to watch the wave riders, or try it yourself.
- 6 p.m. — Houston Roller Derby Playoffs. This month, all three Houston teams are going to each play against the other teams in round-robin style. Game 1: Burlesque Brawlers vs Bayou City Bosses, Game 2: Bayou City Bosses vs Psych Ward Sirens, Game 3: Psych Ward Sirens vs Burlesque Brawlers. The first bout begins at 7 p.m. at Kicks, 611 Shepherd i the Heights. Tickets are $12 for all three games.
SUNDAY
- Today is Go Skateboarding Day. It's also the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. The Southside Skatepark is throwing a quinceanera to celebrate, from 2-8 p.m. Free and open to the public.
- 2 p.m. — Make Music Houston, a celebration of French music and culture in Houston, will present 14 bands in one day, all at the West Alabama Ice House, 1919 W. Alabama. Bands range from punk to French pop to jazz. Its free to get in, there will be hot dogs and other munchies, and rumor is there's a big-ass water slide too.
