H-Town Rock
For the Weekend of June 25th-28th, 2009
Houstonist wants you!... to see some shows this weekend. Good grief Charlie Brown, would you look at that list down there? It is our professional snark-delivering opinion that if you are cooped up all weekend and do not make it to a single event, you are indeed lame. So please do not disappoint us, Houston. Where will our Joe Cool-ness be found? Read on to find out.
On Thursday, we'll pass on the pop offerings that Ben Kweller is sure to bring through House of Blues. If it were a different Ben, say a Mr. Folds, we might show up hoping that he'd remind us about the rules of relationships. Instead, we'll head over to Mango's for a loud, sweaty, and most likely sloppy show that happens to be B L A C K I E's tour kick-off.
Friday we have a gig, so we're slightly biased, but we'll try to be objective. Our dad will most likely stop by Mucky Duck to catch Hadden Sayers, while we expect plenty of people will venture over to see the Arena Theatre show. The Starlight Mints should be a good show as well. If you want to hang out with us, we'll be watching closely as Sara Van Buskirk works her magic at Avant Garden and praying we don't screw up our set.
Saturday is packed, and if you're one of those folks that enjoy watching people emulate your favorite rockstars, you have not one, but two choices before you. We'll politely decline visiting the past, and seek out two great concerts that showcase some local talent: Indian Jewelry is playing The Mink, while The Goods and Hollywood Black are hanging out at Super Happy Fun Land. If you're into reggae and dubstep, you should make sure to catch Dubtex at The Last Concert Cafe.
After all those choices, we're happy that our decision on Sunday is a bit easier - you'll find us drinking Lone Star on tap as we take in the Cryptacize show at Walter's on Washington.
So let's hear it Houston, where will you be? We know there's a lot of random events Saturday concerning Pride, so if there's a show we missed please list it in the comments.
