Interview: Chris "Big Black" Boykin

20090625_big_black.jpg Chris "Big Black" Boykin is one of half of the hilarious duo that starred in the hit MTV series Rob and Big. The series centered around pro skater Rob Dyrdek, his bodyguard Big and their outlandish escapades, like man-pons, adopting a mini-horse, Bobby Light and Black Lavender.

Big left the show to focus on being a father. The show's third and final season concludes with the birth of his daughter Isis.

How's Isis? She's 18 months?

She's doing great. She's 15 months. Being a dad is great. It's a life changing thing. Makes you want to be a better man when you have kids.

You've slimmed down since the show. Are you more health conscience since you're a dad now?

On the show I was 420. I'm down to 385 now. I'm still a chunky guy, but I can be a healthy chunky guy as well. Having a daughter is everything. I want to see her graduate high school and go to college.

Tell us about your new show, The Big Life.

I live in Dallas now. The guy who built my house is a suit by day and a gold chains and grill dude at night. He bought a talent agency and wants me to help him run it. I said, "If we're gonna do this, we should film it." We're looking for talent, kind of like American Idol.

Production is already under way. I'm paying for my own pilot and am going to take it to MTV, Spike, whoever looking for the best deal.

What about The Chunky Boyz new CD?

We've been writing music and doing music since the beginning of the Rob & Big show. We did a song called Dirty Girl and it did very well. MTV turned it into ring tones and sold it. But, we didn't get any money.

We couldn't release [a CD while doing Rob & Big] or else MTV would own it. One thing I learned in Hollywood is you have to do you own stuff to get the best deal. I'm paying for my own beats and my own studio time.

More with Big, including college football and cooking, after the jump.

Speaking of records, do you plan to beat your Guinness World Records?

There is a guy in Cleveland that beat my donut record [most powdered donuts eaten in three minutes]. We were just in Cleveland, and I called him out. I haven't heard from him, but I'm willing to defend the donut belt if he contacts me.

Did you know how to cook before you enlisted in the Navy?

Yes I did. I've got six Aunts so I knew how to cook. I used to sit and watch them. My mom used to groom me in case I never got married so I could do for myself and fend for myself.

What's your favorite recipe?

I'm a big gumbo dude. I do a lot of that creole stuff. I can make gumbo, jambalaya and all of that from scratch.

You're from Mississippi and once took Rob home [Rob & Big, Season 2]. How often do you get back?

I'll be back in August once the humidity calms down a bit. I'll be at the first home game for my alma mater Stone County High School.

Who's your football team: Ole Miss, Mississippi State or Southern Miss?

Ole Miss. I like Houston Nutt. He's a great coach. And, the only guy from our high school to ever go pro, Stevon Moore, played at Ole Miss.

Are you still in the executive security business?

Not really. I run the business. I've got people who work for me...a staff of 15 folks who do that for me.

But, Miller Lite called me to get my take on protection for their Taste Protector; it protects the flavor of the beer. I'm honored that they asked for my advice on protection.

The Taste Protector ads got pulled following allegations of ethnic stereotyping. Have you seen any protests while you've been on the Taste Protector Tour?

No. You've got to conjoin the product with a person who's actually doing it. The mob guys in the commercials were actors. Bam Bam and I are actually in the protection business. That also makes it easier to put a comic slant on the ads and not offend anyone.

Thanks, Big.

Big and Bam will be out on the town in Houston tomorrow night. They want to meet you. Rules and regulations prevent them from saying where they'll be until they get there. But, Houstonist will be tweeting our way around town while we are with them. Follow Houstonist on Twitter to get updates.
