What the futsal?

063009_futsal.jpg Another thing to add to the Houston diversity list: a futsal facility. What exactly is futsal? Well, we’re glad you asked.

Think soccer, but abbreviated. According to Wikipedia, futsal is soccer with 5 people on each side, one being the goaltender. It’s played on a hard court with a smaller ball with less bounce. It is also usually played indoors. That is, except the facility recently opened in Houston…

Javier Lacayo, originally from Nicaragua, introduced Houston to futsal through the outdoor facility at 8383 Creekbend Drive at South Gessner Road. It is over 1.5 acres and home to league play of up to 10 teams per night and over 35 teams total. Javier has plans to open more fields in the near future for Houstonians to get their futsal fix.

Want to tire your kids out while they’re out of school? Send them to one of the Futsal Center’s kids’ clinics. Want to sweat your ass off in the summer heat and play with a league? Contact the Futsal Center for additional info: 281.576.9494.
