Weekendist July 3-5: Heat, Fear, Trivia

070309_fearloathing.jpg If you're lucky, you've got today off. But Houstonist never rests, and we're slaving away to help you set your social calendar for this holiday weekend. Our favorite events below.

All Weekend

Friday

  • 11:55 p.m. — River Oaks Midnight Movie: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Houstonist personally thinks this movie, based on Hunter S. Thompson's drug-fueled journey into the heart of the American Dream, is one of the best book-to-film translations of all time. Plus? It stars heartthrobs Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro in decidedly un-sexy roles. Tickets are $9.50,
    children and seniors $6.50.

Saturday

  • It's closing night for Nova Arts Project's one-man play Thom Pain (warning: annoying audio on that website, unless a horde of bees isn't annoying to you). The pay sounds interesting even though we can't quite figure what it's about. We do know it's stars Seán Patrick Judge, who was excellent as Jim Lehrer in Catastrophic Theatre's The Strangerer last year. At 2 p.m. there's a pay-what-you-can matinee, and tickets for the final show, at 8 p.m. are $15, $10 for students and seniors.

Sunday

  • 8 p.m. — Trivia Throwdown with Mark Rudkin's (a.k.a. @astromark at Ron's Pub, San Felipe at Fountain View. Grab three friends and come flex your brains against the smartest bar patrons on the planet — including Houstonist. It's free to play but a drink or two will make you more lucid.
