Still sleeping off the Independence hangover? Not much happening this weekend, so you can easily make each of the events below.
FRIDAY
- 6 p.m. — Sankofa, a free film at Project Row Houses, 2500 Holman. Sankofa is an Akan (Ghanaian) word meaning "one must return to the past in order to move forward." Written and directed by Ethiopian-born filmmaker and Howard University professor Haile Gerima, Sankofa is the story of the psycho-spiritual journey of Mona, a self-possessed African American woman and model in the U.S., who faces an identity crisis. From the African continent through the Middle Passage and the Americas, Mona relives her past and is transformed.
SATURDAY
- 2 p.m. — Third Annual Frida Festival celebrating the life and works of Frida Kahlo, East End Urban Market 716 Telephone Road. Free event will include live music, a children's Frida look-alike contest, art and more.
SUNDAY
- 6-9 p.m. — Swingfield Playboys featuring Herb Remington, at the Mucky Duck, 2425 Norfolk. Remington is a Houston treasure. At about 83 years old, he's still playing strong on the lap steel guitars he lent his name to. Remington was a member of Bob Wills' Texas Playboys (remember Bob's calls: "Aww Herbie!") but now he plays with Texas country swing band the Swingfield Playboys. They used to have a regular gig at Cosmos Cafe before it became frat-boy central. Catch him while you can! Tickets are a measly $10.
