For the Weekend of July 30th - August 2nd
Come one, come all, to the new-look H-Town Rock! Well, we really just tried to clean it up a bit visually, but we're counting it. Think of it as us going in for a trim instead of a whole new 'do. Now let's get down to business.
If you aren't getting into Warehouse Live tonight for the free HPMA Ceremony, try catching some local indie rock for free at Boondocks. Or slip into The Mink and catch what is apparently the last edition of SPEAKERBOXX, forever. For-ev-er. We aren't sure just why it will be the finale for this longstanding DJ night, so if you know fill us in.
Friday's metal show featuring breakdown-heavy August Burns Red has been moved from the now-defunct Javajazz to The Meridian. Apparently the two have merged, and we couldn't be happier as it means less shows in the boonies. If blastbeats aren't your thing, then you should really think about doing a solid for the Houston music scene and show up to the second annual Leave Your Genre At The Door at Fitzgerald's. Houstonist is really proud of those folks for getting some diverse local acts together in hopes of cross-pollinating the local scene.
We'll skirt Saturday's red state celebration extravaganza in The Woodlands, and the hacky sack festival at Sam Houston Race Park, making sure to catch a fantastic in-store day at Cactus Music. William Fitzsimmons, Jenny Owen Youngs, The Tontons AND free St. Arnold's? Talk about amazing, and that's just the afternoon! Later we'll take a pass on the Hispanic Power Hour at Toyota Center and trek into downtown to catch The Caprolites at Notsuoh. Or maybe we'll wind up at Mango's to catch William & Jenny again.
Sunday offers a unique opportunity. While the teens & 'tweens are watching Katy Perry at Verizon Wireless you have the opportunity to see the original monsters of folk at Cynthia Woods. Note: we are certainly excited about what James, Oberst & Ward can do together, but Dylan, Nelson & Mellencamp have significantly more musical clout.
So let's hear it, Houston. Tell us where you'll be.
