::Maseo (De La Soul) at the Flat::
For a small moment in time last night, Houston actually appeared as a major music market metropolis. As Houstonist was getting our nostalgia on the Willie/Mellencamp/Dylan Neapolitan treat, many were across town at the House of Blues for the De La Soul show. Splitting the music vote, Katy Perry entertained a Verizon Wireless crowd (finally) after canceling twice before last night's high-energy show.
A dichotomous contrast to last Sunday's Houston Press Music Awards Showcase, as local talent graced some of these same stages. Perhaps reminding us that while all too often getting skipped over on major tours, we've sufficed ourselves by internally creating a music monster. When life gives you lemons, make local music.
Further reminding us of this city's accessibility to national acts being married with local favorites, tonight at the Flat Maseo from De La Soul joins newly crowned Best DJ in Houston, DJ Sun, for a special Rock Steady set. For years now, Sun has been bringing in heavy hitters to share his turntables with on Monday nights. Surely a reason for his reigning title, and a testament to what Houston musicians do so well: never forget where they are from.
