Bark at BARC: Monday morning protest Downtown

Houstonist has been quite impressed with our friend The Houston Press' coverage of the years-long debacle at BARC (a.k.a. The City of Houston animal impound center). With daily posts on the Hair Balls blog and in-depth interviews, The Press has been asking questions the other local news agencies have been neglecting.

Most notably, The Press has been following the case of Shelby Kibodeaux , one of the many volunteers at BARC who claim to have witnessed abuse of animals there by hired employees. After Kibodeaux filed a complaint with the Department of Health and Human Services regarding abuse he reportedly witnessed, he was charged by the Harris County District Attorney's Office with filing a false police report. (The police department says video tape of the incident does not jibe with Kibodeaux's account.)

BARC volunteers, animal lovers and supporters of Kibodeaux are staging a protest tomorrow morning outside the Harris County Criminal Courts Building, 1201 Franklin Street Downtown, to call for drastic change at the organization. Protestors are asked to gather at 8:30 a.m., and the protest will coincide with Kibodeaux's 9 a.m. appearance before a judge.
