If you ever tried stargazing in Houston you discovered there's more than one kind of "pollution" in the city. Head a mere 40 miles south of downtown and not only is the light pollution less intense, but some one named George put a big telescope out there to enjoy the night sky.
Tonight the George Observatory and Brazos Bend State Park will host a watch party for the Perseid Meteor Shower. Considered by many nerds astronomy buffs to be the best meteor shower of the year, it should prove to be quite a show. The park's Nature Center will stay open until 7:00 PM, and from 7:00 to 9:00 there will be a booth set up with live animals. We're pretty sure they won't let you pet the animals, but here's hoping! The watch party begins at 9:00 PM and will continue to midnight, when the moon rises and messes everything up any way. During the party the big 36 inch telescope will be open for stargazing, but we're told no special equipment is necessary to view the meteors. We do recommend insect repellant if you intend to stay sane.
