H-Town Rock

For the Weekend of August 13th - August 16th

theliterarygreats.jpg Welcome back to yet another edition of H-Town Rock, dear reader. We've missed you, so let's get down to business and speak of weekend plans. Fear not, Poppa Houstonist is here to guide your way.

On Monday night we took a trip out to The Corkscrew to see Sara Van Buskirk and Brandon Elam for a nice change of pace, and Brandon mentioned to us that not only has his band, The Literary Greats, been recording, but also they have a show at The Continental Club tonight. Seeing Brandon solo was nice, but we're more excited about the full band, so we'll be headed to the "Coolest Block In Town." The show at Walter's looks intriguing as well.

Friday night The Lonely H roll through town, fronted by 19 year-old Mark Fredson and bringing their throwback Americana to Rudyard's. Our apologies to local stars Blue October, but we'll either be at Rudz or possibly The Mink for the epic Roky Moon and Bolt [seriously, did you see them at Summer Fest?]. Note: unless you enjoy large crowds of pre-teens and teenyboppers, avoid Toyota Center. In fact, if you're reading this and you do enjoy massive crowds of children, stay home because you're a creep.

Saturday finds us with some sort of all day crawfish boil and punk show at Dan Electro's, which we'll politely pass on to catch Guitars at Cactus Music. Houstonist has it on good authority that the band is about to move to North Carolina, so catch them before they leave. We're really torn Saturday night, however: Bob Schneider swings through, and Listenlisten and Robert Ellis have what is certain to be a fine show at the Indie Houston house before they head out on a two-week jaunt. But wait, there's more! The Mathletes are one of four bands releasing their CD, and they've got Young Mammals and our Baytown heroes Ghost Mountain on the show - and is that a rebirth of Houston's 60's psych group Fever Tree down there? Goodness.

Which brings us to Sunday - Juzcoz has their EP release at Isis, B L A C K I E is at Mango's, The Meridian is playing host to an all-day So-Cal punk "invasion," and Super Happy Fun Land is host to Two Star Symphony and I Am Mesmer. We'd like to be everywhere, but we're not going to miss the show at The Mink, with one-man music-machine Benjamin Wesley, Finnegan, Prairie Cadets, and The Julys. That lineup is stacked.
