Daily-ist Tuesday: Hula Hula at Cinema Bomar

On Friday, Hawaii, the nation's 50th state and birthplace of our President, will celebrate 50 years of statehood.

Though some consider the anniversary a sobering moment, others plan to mark the event with backyard luaus and parties reminiscent of the Polynesian fads that swept the country in the years following World War II (some of it brought home by soldiers who'd served in the Pacific).

Tonight, Cinema Bomar, Houston's own repository and purveyor of vintage 16mm films, will present a screening called Hula Hula featuring vintage films glorifying and celebrating everything from the hip-swaying dance to the cocktails to King Kamehameha. The show is free and starts at 8:30 p.m. behind Domy on Brasil's back patio.
